New Book coming out soon
My good friends, my new book is coming out soon. We’ve completed the final edits and now we are in the typesetting phase. Just a few more perfections need to be made to make this book a reality for you.
My thanks to Angelico Press and their team for bringing this book to reality. It has been a 5 year project and I’m so happy to see it so close to being in your hands.
Good news. I just submitted my next book maunscript - God Alone: Meditations on Holy Saturday, Mercy, and Compassion. I'm so excited for you all to read it. 93,000 words of goodness.
Here's a few lines from the Preface:
This book is about compassion — true, authentic compassion. The book comes most immediately out of my involvement with a religious movement called Heart’s Home who have used the spirituality of Adrienne von Speyr (1902–1967) and Catherine Doherty (1896–1985) to serve the poorest of the poor through offering their compassionate presence. ... I believe that God alone has loved us to the utmost extent and God alone can save us. This book in eleven chapters seeks to make a complete sketch of a compassionate theology of Holy Saturday in which one theological moment will be used to interpret the most important aspects of Christianity with the hope that this theology makes Christianity relevant to you. Or, put differently, you will come to know the compassionate presence of Jesus Christ in your life.
The book will be available through Fortress Press, who published my previous book. We will have some work to do to bring it to you as soon as possible, but please keep praying and following here for news about when it is available. I can't wait for you to read it!
On February 1, 2017, I presented on the Communion of Saints to the Catholic Scholars at St. John's University. A student was kind to record the video. I hope you enjoy this presentation called Saints as Fathers and Mothers.

I was featured in the Tablet with an article from the Evangelization Congress as I spoke about the importance of Pope Francis’ exhortation, the Joy of Love.
“‘The Joy of Love’ is a master document on the church’s teaching on the family, marriage, sexuality as well as the virtue of marriage and educating children,” said Sutton, who attends Holy Family Church, Fresh Meadows, with his wife and five daughters. “God is providing a source of comfort and companionship for every family in the word of God.”
Sutton broke down the exhortation’s sections and likened it to Pope Francis washing the feet of 12 people during Holy Thursday liturgy, when the pope made three movements: cleansing, kissing the feet, and accompanying the person. This relates to a culture of encountering families where they are, followed by kissing and acknowledging the reality and challenges families face, and constantly accompanying families, which includes the extended family.
“Our grandparents, they come from a generation where if something is broken you fix it,” Sutton said. “We live in a broken culture, where we throw away our spouses when it gets tough, but remember that generation… Ask for help and reach out when that fixing needs to happen.”
He also talked about the examples of families in Scripture and how humankind starts with a family in Adam and Eve and is redeemed in Jesus’ family. He added that the intent of the pope in having two synods on the family as well as this exhortation is to respond to the brokenness families can experience and remind the faithful that God’s grace is always available for them.
On Saturday, November 19, 2016, I presented at the Evangelization Congress for the Diocese of Brooklyn and Queens. My presentation was on Pope Francis' exhortation The Joy of Love.
Here I focused on the image of Francis’ washing of the feet as an interpretative key for how we can evangelize to the broken families in our diocese. I’m so looking forward to the testimonies that will come from this day of healing and reaching out to the Lord.

Let the pre-judging begin. Yes, I play chess and I play it well. I play well enough to know better and well enough to know that I can sometimes hold my own against the strong.
